Assertive to Optative and Vice Versa

Key Notes:

1. Tone Matters:

a. Assertive sentences convey information or facts.

b. Optative sentences express wishes, blessings, or prayers.

2. Subjectivity:

When converting, ensure the tone of the original sentence is retained while making the necessary structural changes.

3. Negative Wishes:

Use “May not” for negative optative sentences:

Assertive: He should not face failure.
Optative: May he not face failure!

Assertive to Optative

Assertive Sentences start with Subject+ verb

Optative Sentences start with May/Long

To change an assertive sentence (a declarative statement) into an optative sentence (a wish or prayer):

Rules:

1. Identify the nature of the statement: a positive wish/a blessing/ a negative wish.

2. Add expressions like “May” or “Wish” at the beginning of the sentence to express desire or prayer.

3. Remove auxiliary verbs (if necessary)

4. Adjust word order if needed

Examples:

Assertive: He will succeed in life.
Optative: May he succeed in life.

Assertive: I hope you recover soon.
Optative: May you recover soon.

Assertive: We all desire peace in the world.
Optative: May there be peace in the world.

Optative to Assertive

To change an optative sentence (a wish or prayer) into an assertive sentence (a declarative statement):

Rules:

1. Remove words like “May” or “Wish”

2. Make it declarative

Examples:

Optative: May he succeed in life.
Assertive: He will succeed in life.

Optative: May you recover soon.
Assertive: I hope you will recover soon.

Optative: Wish you a prosperous New Year.
Assertive: I hope you have a prosperous New Year.
